I decided to enter into the Rain World Discord server's region room jam! I have no idea if my room(s) will end up being added, but it'll definitely be cool if they are!
I decided to make an Undergrowth room. I contemplated doing a Silent Construct or even Shoreline room, but decided the most interesting one would be Undergrowth, as people likely hadn't done that one a lot, and Undergrowth is one of my favorite regions!
Post-apocalyptic styles, and the sort of reclamation nature does on artifical creations has always been beautiful to me, and Undergrowth is one of the regions that provides that feeling. Drainage system has now been transformed into a ecosystem full of life... not to say it was originally lifeless, but you can probably understand what I mean.
For my room, which I'll call UG_puffball, I wanted to make a large Undergrowth room with a lot of parkour and jumping, with some sort of hole into the surface world. My original note for ideas on this room stated, "Undergrowth/Drainage - Annoying jumps because theres no more water". Something akin to the room after the Outskirts to Farm Arrays gate, LF_D04. After looking for reference, I stumbled upon the room UG_B04. I decided this room would be my main source of inspiration.
I ended up being inspired from LF_D04, UG_B04, UG_B07, UG_B02, and VS_E06! (Farm Arrays, Undergrowth, and Pipeyard.)
After continuing to work on UG_puffball, I noticed a lot of other Undergrowth rooms were made with the dark green palette of the lower portions of Undergrowth, so I chose to make my room a bit lighter, almost like a transition room between these two.
My sibling helped a lot with ideas for UG_puffball, they're the reason I added a pearl, lantern, and blue fruits! I am very happy with my room, even if it doesn't get added to the region room jam mod, perhaps I'll put it somewhere in my own region mod.
I also have ideas for a small Outer Rim room, but I'm unsure if I'll have enough time for it.
Not sure what to write for my first log here...
I am currently working on the first region for my mod. It's one I've named "Above Recognition", but it isn't the first region you enter... That one is a region that doesn't really have a permanent name yet, but it's meant to be a sort of subway system, connecting up somewhere near Outer Expanse or Subterranean. Not super original for a region mod, but hopefully my take on the concept will be interesting enough. (Although obviously, it doesn't matter too much, since I'm making these regions for fun.)
Above Recognition's rooms are "almost finished", by that I mean most of the rooms have geometry I'm happy with, but some of them aren't tiled completely (since I get excited to start the next thing...), and none of the rooms have creature spawns yet. I want to finish every room and have the parkour all set up properly before adding creatures.
I have a lot of ideas for my regions, but I'll have to learn a lot of things to achieve them... I hope I can stay resilient, and eventually manage to complete this thing!
As for the most recent progress on my mod, I managed to add my own custom threat music! I don't really know how to make music at all, so I sort of just messed around on a website (Ultrabox) and made something... interesting, I'll say. I have no idea if I'll keep the track I made, perhaps if I get better at music I'll redo it? We'll see, I guess. Currently, I'm happy enough with it.
I'm not sure how many regions I'll make yet... But I am going to make a lot of them! My mod will be it's own sort of story, with (hopefully) custom endings. It's pretty much a Rain World AU. I also hope to add many cool secrets to find! Primarily hidden rooms where you have to do something, and then something cool happens. Many ideas...
If you were curious on who's working on this mod, it's just me and my sibling. I'm doing everything, and then my sibling helps with figuring out the story a bit. They're also a coder, so hopefully with their help I can learn how to code!
I have a lot of hopes, and I think I'll be able to achieve them, it'll just take a really long time. I am excited to learn new things though! I think coding will be interesting, it's just a new language I have to learn how to speak in (like HTML!), eventually all those strange words will make sense to me (like HTML). I do have a few fears though, like the often baseless anxiety of "What if I have a really cool idea and make it, but someone else has the EXACT same idea and then I somehow future-stole from them?" I know even if that somehow happens, our ideas will be ours. we'll have unique spins on the concept.
I also, somewhat obviously with everything I've said, have the fear I won't be able to complete it all. But I think even if I don't, I'll atleast get close to it. But only time will tell...
Okay, I've infodumped and rambled long enough on you, internet citizen. Thanks for listening, if you did read it all.
